E.C. Segar’s birthday, which is why Google have decided to celebrate by posting a doodle on their home page. For those of you who had never heard of E.C. Segar before now, he is the creator of Popeye. Google have depicted the cartoon character, which first entered the public consciousness back in 1929 in Segar’s newspaper comic strip, in a typically feisty pose, to honor Elzie Crisler Segar on what would have been his 115th birthday. Segar was born in Illinois on December 8th 1894 and showed talent in drawing at quite a young age. He studied a correspondence course in cartooning, before he eventually decided to move to Chicago to pursue his career in cartoons.
The cartoonist died on October 13th, 1938 at the age of 43. The Popeye character has lived on since then, appearing in television cartoons, advertisements and even in a 1980 movie about the character, which starred Robin Williams. E.C. Segar was born at this day, exactly 115 years ago on December 8, 1894 in Illinois. The Giant among the Internet search providers, Google has depicted a spirited Elzie Crisler Segar poster in a Google Doodle to honor the Popeye creator on his birthday. Many of our readers wouldn’t be aware of Elzie Crisler Segar whereas a creation of this particular American cartoonist is well known to both the kids and their parents. He was the man behind presenting the famous spinach eating macho man character that indeed ruled the cartoon world over the years.
